Artists at Risk (AR)

Artists, writers, curators, critics and scholars are targets of politically motivated threats and persecution in great parts of the world. PM-Perpetuum Mobile cooperates with organisations such as PEN, SafeMUSE and ICORN (The International Cities of Refuge Network) to address the needs of persecuted artists and other art professionals. This encompasses facilitating a safe exit from countries of origin; procurement and arrangement of travel documents; providing legal assistance; and matching them with so-called Safe Havens and similar residencies. PM liaises with several cities and networks which provide “artists at risk” a safe place to live and work for a period of time.

PM-Perpetuum Mobile has run short-term residencies for artists at risk since 2013. We have initiated and curated the On the Move programme, run in partnership with HIAP (Helsinki International Artist Programme). This partnership also established a network called Nordic Fresh Air, which includes Nordic and Baltic art actors who work with art practitioners at risk, funded by the Nordic Cultural Point and the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture (2014-2016). Safe Haven-Helsinki was launched in 2016.

PM SAFE HAVEN cities:

SAFE HAVEN – HELSINKI
A long-term fully-funded programme financed by the City of Helsinki (2016-). Safe Haven Helsinki is co-organised by Perpetuum Mobile and HIAP. Programme is curated by Perpetuum Mobile.

SAFE HAVEN – ATHENS
This long-term initiative is in preparation to be launched as part of the Athens Biennale “Omonia” in 2017 in collaboration with Perpetuum Mobile and European Alternatives

RESISTANCE RESIDENCY – PROVENCE
This initiative is currently in development

SAFE HAVEN – BERLIN

Safe Haven Berlin will be launched in collaboration with Perpetuum Mobile, SAVVY Contemporary  and European Alternatives in 2017.

As not all artists wish to be designated as ‘at risk’ or in ‘Safe Havens’, this project may also be referred to as ‘On The Move’ in Helsinki. For older information on PM’s work with artists at risk in cooperation with HIAP see the posts on this site and at: http://www.hiap.fi/project/move.
